This year Cervical Screening Awareness Week runs from ning from Monday 21st – Tuesday 28th January 2025, highlighting the importance of regular cervical screenings (smear tests) in preventing cervical cancer. This campaign is a vital reminder that early detection can save lives and that we all have a role to play in raising awareness and encouraging action.

Why Cervical Screening Is Essential

Cervical cancer remains the most common cancer in women under 35. Tragically, two women in the UK lose their lives to cervical cancer every day. However, cervical screenings can prevent up to 75% of cases, saving around 5,000 lives annually.

Despite these facts, many individuals don’t attend their appointments due to fear, embarrassment, or logistical challenges. By creating a culture that supports and encourages cervical health, we can help to overcome these barriers.

How to get involved & help spread awareness:

Encouraging cervical screening in the workplace can have a lasting impact on employee wellbeing. Here are some practical ways to spread awareness and inspire action:

  1. Spark Conversation
    • Share educational content about cervical screening and HPV vaccination
    • Promote myths versus facts to dispel common misconceptions and reduce fear or stigma.
    • Flexible scheduling – offer time off or adjust schedules to make it easier for employees to attend their appointments.
  2. Organise a Workshop or Webinar
    • Host a workshop or webinar, inviting a healthcare professional to speak on the topic and/or invite individuals to share their experiences.
    • Distribute leaflets, infographics, or posters in relevant areas of the office.
  3. Encourage Action
    • Remind individuals to book their cervical screening appointments or check if they’re up to date.
    • Partner with local health services to promote mobile clinics or initiatives that increase access to screenings.
  4. Fundraising and Support
    • Include Cancer Research as one of your chosen fundraising charities that your organisation supports and encourage staff to get involved in ways to raise vital funds and self awareness.
