The Power of a Lunchtime Walk
Alison Brown

As National Fitness Day approaches on 18th September, now is the perfect time to think about how we can integrate more physical activity into our daily work routines. One simple, yet powerful way of doing this is leading by example and encouraging your team to take a walk during lunchtime. Not only does it promote physical health, but it also has a range of benefits for mental wellbeing and workplace productivity.
Whether you’re looking for ways to encourage a more active workforce, or simply wish to support colleagues carve out time to get moving during their day, here are some key benefits to share with your team and my tips to encourage them to get out walking this National Fitness Day.
- Enhanced mental clarity and focus – a midday walk can work wonders for clearing the mind. Stepping away from your desk and getting some fresh air can give you a much needed mental boost and help shake off that afternoon slump.
- It allows the brain to reset, leading to improved concentration and creativity.
- Improved physical health – walking is a low-impact exercise that helps to improve cardiovascular health, strengthen muscles, and increase overall fitness levels. Even a short 20-30 minute walk can contribute to meeting daily physical activity guidelines, which is crucial for maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
- Reduces Stress – physical activity is a proven stress-buster, so walking during lunchtime can help reduce stress levels, improve mood, and increase feelings of relaxation. This not only benefits individual employees but also creates a more positive and harmonious work environment.
- Enhanced social connections – it’s a great opportunity for team members to connect outside of work discussions, leading to improved teamwork and communication. Or is there a conversation with a colleague that could be done while walking? Remember, ideas form when the mind is clearer!
- Increased energy level – regular movement throughout the day, such as taking a walk during lunch, can help maintain energy levels. This prevents the post-lunch energy dip, keeping employees alert and productive throughout the afternoon.
- Increases step count, supporting those with a daily step count target or looking to achieve one!
- Supports mindfulness – bring awareness to the present moment, engage the senses and encourage a calm mind.
Encouraging Your Team to Get Moving
To reap these benefits, it’s important to actively encourage your team to incorporate walking into their daily routines. Here are some ways you can do that:
- Lead by Example: Managers and team leaders can set the tone by taking regular lunchtime walks themselves. When employees see leadership prioritising breaks and physical activity, they’re more likely to follow suit.
- Organise Group Walks: Schedule regular group walks as part of the workday, especially on National Fitness Day. This could be a short stroll around the block or a nearby park. It’s a great way to build camaraderie while promoting physical activity.
- Create Walking Challenges: Introduce friendly competitions, like step challenges, where employees can track their steps and compete for prizes. This adds a fun element and motivates the team to stay active.
- Flexible Lunch Breaks: Allow employees to have flexible lunch breaks so they can fit in a walk without feeling rushed. This flexibility shows that you value their well-being and encourage a healthy work-life balance.
- Provide Walking Routes: Share maps or suggestions for local walking routes around the office. Knowing where to go can make it easier for employees to get started.
Remember, promoting physical activity doesn’t just benefit individual employees—it leads to a healthier, happier, and more productive team. This National Fitness Day, let’s take steps—literally and figuratively—towards a healthier workplace.
